Presentation - “Chair of Honor”

Body

BACKGROUND

Carl Steinhoff of Rolling Thunder Florida, Chapter 5, contacted City staff about placing a “Chair of Honor” in Veterans’ Community Park (VCP) when the park reconstruction is completed. The Chair of Honor is meant to recognize POW/MIA servicemen. The attached presentation shows examples of the Chair of Honor being dedicated in parks around Lee and Collier Counties.  Cambier Park in Naples received a “Chair of Honor” (also known as the Missing Man Chair) on Veterans Day this year.

Mr. Steinhoff has worked in coordination with the American Legion Post 404 regarding a potential location within VCP and it was suggested by Lee Rubinstein to place the Chair near the Blue Star Family Memorial.

FUNDING SOURCE / FISCAL IMPACT:  The Chair of Honor, plaque, and stanchions would be donated by Rolling Thunder Florida, Chapter 5. The City would have to provide a 5x6 cement slab.  This is currently not part of the park project or the project budget.

RECOMMENDATION:  Receive the presentation and request a recommendation from the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee regarding whether to place the Chair of Honor in Veterans Community Park.
