BACKGROUND:
Residents of the City successfully petitioned the City Council to consider adopting the Committee to Improve the Quality of Marco Island Reuse Water, Inc.’s, Ordinance: "For The Purpose Of Upgrading The Marco Island Wastewater Treatment Plant To Achieve Advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT) Nutrient Standards To Meet A Total Nitrogen (TN) Standard Expressed As "N" Of The No More Than 3 MG/L And A Total Phosphorus (TP) Standard Expressed as "P" Of No More Than 1 MG/L ". (City Charter Section 6.01 (1)).
During the April 20, 2026, Council voted 6-0 in favor (1 member absent) of approving the first reading of the Committee's proposed Ordinance (Ordinance 26-02).
If Council fails to adopt the Ordinance as proposed, without any change in substance, Council is required to place the Ordinance on the ballot, before the voters on the August 18, 2026, primary election.
FUNDING SOURCE: NA.
PUBLIC NOTICE REQUIREMENTS: Ordinance read by title on at least 2 separate days and shall be noticed in a newspaper of general circulation at least 10 days prior to the second reading. A Business Impact Statement was posted on April 22, 2026 to the City Website prior to the legal notification.
