Presentation - Florida Trail Town Designation for the City of Marco Island, Councilor Bonita Schwan
Body
BACKGROUND:
On October 8, 2025, the City of Marco Island was officially designated as Florida’s 22nd Trail Town by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Greenways and Trails. This recognition highlights the city’s commitment to trail-friendly amenities and outdoor recreation. To qualify for the designation, Marco Island identified its network of trails, bike lanes, and shared-use paths; installed additional signage to encourage walking, biking, and hiking; and engaged with the Chamber of Commerce to promote these outdoor assets to residents and visitors alike. As a representative on the MPO board, Councilor Schwan took the lead in working with many agencies to accomplish this designation for the City.
Attached is a description of a ‘Florida Trail Town’ and a photo of the official Florida Greenways & Trails Trail Town sign. Marco Island features wayfinding signage throughout the community, helping trail users easily navigate to local attractions and businesses. These enhancements make it easier for visitors to explore and enjoy all that the island has to offer.
