Recommendation by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee to Install a Merchant Marine Flag in Veterans’ Community Park - Samantha Malloy, Manager of Parks, Culture & Recreation
Body
BACKGROUND:
During the June 18, 2024 Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee meeting, the committee voted unanimously to recommend to City Council that the City honor the Merchant Marines by installing a Merchant Marine flag in Veterans’ Community Park. If Council supports this recommendation, staff will research the costs for the flag, pole, and installation, as well as any modifications that need to be made to the flag plaza. Staff will bring a budget request back to City Council.
As a separate issue, PRAC also recommended that City Council support recognition of the Merchant Mariners in the annual Veterans Day and Memorial Day celebrations held at Veterans’ Community Park. Staff recommends that a letter from the Council to the American Legion be sent asking them to add this recognition to their program of events for the November 11, 2024 Veterans Day program and future programs.
FUNDING SOURCE / FISCAL IMPACT: None at this time. Future costs will be presented to Council as a proposed budget amendment.
RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that City Council direct the City Manager to research the cost to install a Merchant Marine flag in Veterans’ Community Park, and to draft a letter from the Chairman to the American Legion requesting recognition of Merchant Mariners in the Veterans Day and Memorial Day programs.
POTENTIAL MOTION: I move to approve the staff’s recommendation.
