Introduction - Medical Director, Dr. Hunter Brown - Chris Byrne, Fire Chief

Body

BACKGROUND

Due to the new Collier County Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (COPCN) ordinance, Fire Rescue Departments providing advanced life support are required to apply for a County COPCN and be licensed by the State of Florida as an Advanced Life Support (ALS) provider, in accordance with State Statute Chapter 401. The State ALS license requires a Medical Director on staff or contractual. Previously we provided ALS through an interlocal agreement with Collier County.

The City has contracted Dr. Hunter Brown to serve as the Fire Rescue Department Medical Director. Dr. Brown is a certified emergency physician currently serving as Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine, Physicians Regional Medical Centers. Dr. Brown is a graduate of Florida State University and Nova Southeastern University and completed his emergency medicine residency at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami.

Dr. Brown will serve as the granting authority approving our Paramedics the ability to render advanced life support treatment. The Medical Director will conduct paramedic credentialing, training and education, protocol and policy development and quality assurance/quality improvement activities. The Medical Director will execute the necessary documents for the Department to achieve the State of Florida Advanced Life Support licensure.

Additionally, Dr. Brown will represent the Fire Rescue Department as a member of the Collier County Medical Directors Coalition.

FUNDING SOURCE / FISCAL IMPACT:  Funding for this Contractual Service, $40,000, is provided in the FY25 Fire Rescue Operating Budget.
