Michael Collins Commemorative Tree Initiative Update (V. Myers)

BACKGROUND: At the Committee’s April 2, 2025 meeting, Committee Member Victoria Myers shared the results of her investigation and her alternative proposal for the planting of a tree commemorating former NASA astronaut and Marco Island resident (deceased) Michael Collins.
On the advice of Marco Island Community Affairs Director Daniel Smith, and given: 1) the already-established landscaping at Castaways Park, and; 2) the recognition of the U.S. Space Force already in place at Veterans Community Park, Member Myers proposed the planting of a Pink Trumpet tree (Handroanthus heterophylla) immediately behind an existing bench in view of the Veterans memorial at Veterans Community Park.
At the Committee’s October 2, 2024 meeting, the Committee allocated $1,000.00 from its 2025 Fiscal Year Tree Fund for the procurement and planting of a tree in honor of Astronaut Michael Collins (see below):
An update on the status and timetable for: 1) procuring a Pink Trumpet tree; 2) scheduling its planting; 3) commemorating its location and intention, and; 4) officially celebrating its completion will be reviewed at the Committee’s May 7th meeting.
FUNDING SOURCE / FISCAL IMPACT: Already allocated from the Committee’s 2025 Fiscal Year Tree Fund Budget.
RECOMMENDATION: Receive Member Myers’ report and recommendations; endorse and support the next steps toward completing this initiative.
POTENTIAL MOTION: None expected.
