Ordinance - First Reading - Proposed Ordinance for Adoption of the Latest Edition of the Florida Building Code - Raul Perez, Chief Building Official

Body

BACKGROUND

Proposed Ordinance Description:

The Florida Building Code is updated with new editions triennially by the Florida Building Commission and adopted as the building code for the State of Florida. All enforcing agencies in the State of Florida must locally adopt the Florida Building Commission's latest editions.

Local Amendments

Per F.S. 553.73(4)(a), municipalities are authorized to make local amendments to their building codes, provided they are no less stringent than the minimum standards described in the Florida Building Code.

The City of Marco Island has historically maintained certain local amendments to our building codes. For example, all waterfront structures must be piling supported or provide a geotechnical evaluation to ensure that the new structure will not place excessive pressure on the seawall, causing the seawall to fail. These local amendments have been carried over from previous editions under section 118.
