DESCRIPTION:

The applicant, the City of Marco Island, is requesting a text change to the city’s sign code, which is part of the City’s Land Development Code, allowing for electronic government information signs in parks, which are only in Public Use (P) zoning districts. This change would allow the city to communicate information to the public about things such as programs, events, laws, notices, and any other similar content. This application is also adding a definition for a “government information sign.”

PLANNING BOARD:

This item was heard by the Planning Board on May 2, 2025. There was discussion regarding the need for electronic signs in our parks and beach access areas, signs sizes, the definition of a kiosk, sign pollution, road safety, and how the signs will be used by park staff.

The Planning Board voted 5-1 to forward a recommendation for approval with the following changes:

-                     Changing public access/easements to public beach access/easements.

-                     Prohibiting commercial advertising.
