“City Council Communication” Agenda Topic
Body
BACKGROUND: A recent “City Council Communication” agenda item has been added to all City Advisory Committee agendas immediately following “Staff Communications”. This allows each Committee’s City Council Liaison or other City Council members an opportunity to provide insight and/or discuss City Council-approved direction with members of the Advisory Committee.
At the Committee’s January 8, 2025 meeting, City Councilor Bonita Schwan addressed the Committee and communicated her intention to propose that the Marco Island City Council endorse and receive twice-annual presentations/reports from the Beautification Advisory Committee and other City Committees during calendar year 2025.
At the Committee’s February 5, 2025 meeting, City Councilor Schwan requested that the Committee present its first report to the City Council at its February 18, 2025 meeting.
At the Committee’s March 5, 2025 meeting, Councilor Schwan encouraged the Committee to bring forward its desires for its 2026 Tree City USA Tree Fund and its Ten Thousand Trees in Ten Years Pilot Program for City Council review prior to the start of the Council’s 2025 - 2026 Fiscal Year Budget Workshop process. She indicated her intention to request that the City Council’s agenda accommodate the Committee’s presentation on those two proposed initiatives when the Council meets for its regular meeting on Monday, May 5, 2025.
At the Committee’s May 7, 2025 meeting, Councilor Schwan thanked Committee Chair Needles for his presentation on behalf of the Committee at the Council’s May 5th meeting, and she indicated her desire to have the Committee come before the Council with an update on its activities and accomplishments later in the 2025 calendar year.
At the Committee’s June 4, 2025 meeting, Marco Island City Councilor Rene Champagne advised the Committee that former Beautification Advisory Committee members David Leaser and Fiona Winter reached out to him to request that the now-sunsetted Ten Thousand Trees in Ten Years Program concept be resurrected for City Council consideration and approval. Councilor Champagne asked that the Committee consider this request and develop a recommendation for the City Council's consideration.
Councilor Champagne also advised the Committee of a $450,000.00 donation assignment by an unnamed donor specifically designated to fund the procurement and installation of shade trees and/or other shade instruments at Veterans Community Park. He invited the Committee to stay aware and engaged in the future development of this initiative.
FUNDING SOURCE / FISCAL IMPACT: TBD for the 2026 Fiscal Year.
RECOMMENDATION: 1) Confirm the Committee’s plan to address and respond to City Councilor Champagne’s requests, and; 2) target a date for the Committee’s review with the Marco Island City Council.
POTENTIAL MOTION: None expected.
