BACKGROUND

 

City Council members serve on boards or committees representing the interests of Marco Island. Currently, there are four main advisory committees or boards that Council members serve:  The Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), the Tourist Development Council (TDC), the Southwest Florida League of Cities, and the Collier County Coastal Advisory Committee (CAC).  

 

As of November 5, 2024, two committees will require new Marco Island Council member representation due to vacancies (term ending, resignation):  Tourist Development Council (TDC) and the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). 

 

New representation required:

 

1.                     METROPOLITAN PLANNING ORGANIZATION (MPO): The Collier MPO was established in 1982 following the Federal Highway Act that required urbanized areas to develop transportation plans and programs as a condition to receive federal capital or operating assistance.  The nine-member MPO is comprised of five members from the Collier County Board of Commissioners, two from the City of Naples, one from Everglades City, and one from the City of Marco Island.  The Florida Department of Transportation is represented on the board as a non-voting member.    The MPO meets on the 25th, once a quarter.  There is no term limit for membership.

 

Current representative for Marco Island:  Councilor Greg Folley 

 

Representation of the MPO will be required by a Councilmember as of November 5, 2024.

 

2.                     TOURIST DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL (TDC): The Collier TDC was established in 1992 to make recommendations to the BCC regarding a proposed plan of uses for tourist development tax revenues, for the effective operation of the special projects or uses of the tourist development tax revenues, and to review all expenditures of revenues from the tourist development trust fund.  The nine-member TDC is comprised of one elected official from the BCC, one from the City of Naples, one from the City of Marco Island, up to four tourism industry owner/operators and two individuals involved in the tourism industry. This Council Meets the 3rd Tuesday every month.  Terms are for 4 years and members may be reappointed.

Representation of the TDC will be required by a Councilmember as of November 5, 2024.

3.                     Current representation by a City Council member for the SOUTHWEST FLORIDA LEAGUE OF CITIES is filled by Councilor Becky Irwin

 

 

4.                     Current representation by a City Council member for the COLLIER COUNTY COASTAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE (CAC) is filled by Vice Chairman Erik Brechnitz (term expires 05/22/2027).

RECOMMENDATION:  Discuss representation openings for Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and Tourist Development Council (TDC) and make a nomination.
