Discussion - Council Member Appointment to the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and the Representative for the Southwest Florida League of Cities - Joan Taylor, City Clerk

BACKGROUND:
City Council members serve on boards or committees representing the interests of Marco Island. Currently, there are four main advisory committees or boards that Council members serve: The Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), the Tourist Development Council (TDC), the Southwest Florida League of Cities, and the Collier County Coastal Advisory Committee (CAC).
As of November 5, 2024, two committees will require new Marco Island Council member representation due to vacancies (term ending, resignation): the Southwest Florida League of Cities and the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).
1) Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO): The Collier County MPO was established in 1982 following the Federal Highway Act that required urbanized areas to develop transportation plans and programs as a condition to receive federal capital or operating assistance. The nine-member MPO is comprised of five members from the Collier County Board of Commissioners, two from the City of Naples, one from Everglades City, and one from the City of Marco Island. The Florida Department of Transportation is represented on the board as a non-voting member. The MPO Board Meetings are held on the second Friday of the month at the Board of County Commissioners Chambers. There is no term limit for membership.
2) Southwest Florida League of Cities (SWFLC): The SWFLC is an organization that represents the municipal interests of 12 cities spanning Charlotte, Collier, Hendry and Lee Counties. Their efforts focus on improving the quality of life for municipal citizens and advocating local decision-making. The SWFLC works closely with the Florida League of Cities (FLC) and actively interacts with Florida Legislature, Governor’s Office, State Agencies and Federal representatives. Members collaborate with other local elected officials. Meetings occur every other month: January, March, May, July, September and November at a location in its jurisdiction.
