Title

Discussion - Electric Bicycles (e-bikes) - Tracy Frazzano, Police Chief

Body

BACKGROUND:

Electric bicycles (e-bikes) are rapidly growing in popularity nationwide and on Marco Island. While offering a sustainable transportation alternative, e-bikes also present new challenges related to safety due to their high speeds (up to 28 mph), as well as impacts on traffic flow and enforcement. Florida law allows local governments to regulate the use of bicycles, e-bikes, and other micromobility devices on sidewalks and shared-use paths.  Regulatory options include speed limits, age restrictions, usage limitations, and class-based restrictions. This summary provides guidance for consideration of a local ordinance to manage these devices safely and effectively.
