Report on 2/18/25 City Council Design Contract Approval for Beach Access Pathway Project (J. Martin)
Body
BACKGROUND: At the Committee’s February 5, 2025 meeting, Committee Staff Liaison Justin Martin advised the Committee that the award of the design contract for the beach pathway access improvement projects at Winterberry Drive and Maple Avenue was scheduled to go before the Marco Island City Council for approval at its February 18, 2025 meeting.
After the City Council’s review and 6 - 0 approval of the proposed design contract at its February 18th meeting, City Councilors Bonita Schwan and Deb Henry attended the February 19, 2025 Beach & Coastal Resources Advisory Committee (B&CRAC) meeting to discuss the Council’s decision.
Members of the B&CRAC recommended that :
1) public restroom facilities be considered;
2) visual beach flora & fauna educational information be considered (e.g. with QR codes);
3) a foot traffic study of the Winterberry public beach access site be undertaken to better understand and plan for the impact of visitors using that beach path accessway
Councilor Henry advised the B&CRAC Committee that she had been in contact with City Manager Mike McNees and proposed that a joint, collaborative, Beautification / Beach & Coastal / Parks & Recreation Advisory Committees “roundtable” be called together to collaborate in bringing Committee inputs into the next phase of the project’s development.
Director Martin will update the Committee on the latest status of this project and the Committee’s opportunity to engage in it.
FUNDING SOURCE / FISCAL IMPACT: Included in the City’s 2025 fiscal year budget.
RECOMMENDATION: Receive Director Martin’s report.
POTENTIAL MOTION: None expected.
