Tree Planting Master Plan Development (All)
Body
BACKGROUND: At the Committee's February 5, 2025 meeting, Committee Chair Marv Needles reintroduced a proposal that Member Mike Cory proposed in early 2024 that the Committee develop a "Master Plan" that prioritizes areas and locations around the Island for additional tree planting if, and when, additional budget is allocated to the Committee by the Marco Island City Council in Fiscal Year 2026 and beyond.
The Committee prioritized planting trees on South Heathwood Drive between San Marco Road and Winterberry Drive as its primary tree-planting initiative for this year, allocating $29,000.00 of its $30,000.00 2025 Tree Fund budget toward this effort at its December 4, 2024 meeting.
At its January 8, 2025 meeting, the Committee identified three (3) alternative areas/locations for the Committee's consideration in the event that the Committee's investigation and plan for South Heathwood Drive not meet the Committee's desired result.
At its February 5, 2025 meeting, City Staff Liaison and Public Works Director Justin Martin advised the Committee that the City Staff (Water & Sewer Department and Public Works Department) were working together to develop a proactive "map" of potential tree planting locations where underground utilities and infrastructure are minimized along the four (4) areas referenced above, in addition to the area alongside the San Marco Road roadway, east of Barfield Drive, heading toward Goodland.
The Committee will discuss its approach toward developing its tree-planting "Master Plan" when it meets on March 5, 2025.
FUNDING SOURCE / FISCAL IMPACT: Future Tree Fund budget allocations, if approved by the Marco Island City Council for FY 2026 and beyond.
RECOMMENDATION: Participate in defining an approach for the Committee to develop its tree-planting "Master Plan".
